Peabody Massachusetts Shopping
Party City in Peabody has been a Halloween store for years, offering a wide selection of costumes, animated props and other Halloween merchandise. Party City is one of the largest Halloween stores in Massachusetts with more than 1,000 stores across the country.
There are other smaller but notable shops in Peabody, including the adjacent Jordan Marsh, and a number of smaller shops on the East Side.
Other retailers have joined the mall, including Macy's, Home Depot and Flying J, the first store in New England. The structure and anchors of the mall remained intact until May 2005, when it was acquired by Federated Department Stores, owner of Macy's. Since Simon's in 1999, there have been more sales of malls, but none since.
Ahead of the new Nordstrom store, Simon built towering skylights and new tenants, including Zara and Forever 21. Now New England Development owns a larger competing mall and began a major expansion and renovation of the Northshore Mall, which significantly increased the size of the mall. The extension opened in November 2009 and has three stores with a total sales area of 1.5 million square meters.
After starting with a small portion of Sears stores, the entire shopping center's outer grounds were fenced to better compete with the nearby Liberty Tree Mall, built by New England Development in 1972. The shopping centre developed a then unique underground delivery tunnel that ran the entire length of the shopping centre.
The snow cleared from the central hall was thrown into a dump truck waiting in the tunnel trap that had enclosed the shopping centre. In 1958, an underground tunnel was built for delivery for the first time in the original Northshore Mall construction, and it was built over the entire length. The process of moving snow from the truck and through the tunnels to the trucks was similar to that of other underground delivery tunnels in New England.
In response, the Northshore Mall began to slowly be enclosed, starting with a small section near the Sears store, and eventually enclosing the entire center. The expansion was completed in 1994 and the massive renovation added nearly two million feet to the shopping center. In response to this expansion, the North Shore Mall was closed completely for the first time in 1995, starting with the small section of Sears. In 1997, after a series of renovations that began with small parts of the closure - in Sears stores and some other downtown stores - it was completely fenced off for more than two years.
A new food court was built next to the original Filene site, which was gutted and rebuilt next to JCPenney. The entrance to the Food Courts was renovated and expanded in the late 2000s, with the Cheesecake Factory opening in October 2007 and P.F. Chang's China Bistro opening in early 2009.
Around the same time, it was decided to close the Lord & Taylor store at the mall, leaving the two anchor malls completely in the dark. Filene moved his store to a new location at the western end of the malls and built a replacement store where the amusement park once was, while Lord and Taylor also built new stores there and in this mall. A new Lord & Taylor store has also been added on this side of the mall, and a second JCPenney store at the eastern end.
With an impractically large mall on the level, Federated made the decision to close the store and move Macy's to the former Filene premises, and Simon landed Nordstrom as a replacement tenant. But that was only temporary, as the Macy's store was split into two locations, with Mens Home moving out of a former Lord & Taylor home. After several years of trying to occupy the 50-year-old anchor, it was demolished in the early 1990s. In the mid-1990s, they closed Filne's Store and used the space to move their Macy's store to a new location at the eastern end of the mall on the corner of Main Street.
In the mid-1990s, a new wing was opened, including a new Macy's store on the west side of Main Street and a Nordstrom store at the east end of the mall. A Wal-Mart store was added, and new stores were opened in both wings, including a Whole Foods Market, Walgreens, and even a walk-in department store in one building.
The first recreational facilities at Northshore Mall included a cinema, bowling alley and Kiddietown, a small theme park. At the time, the recreational facility included a cinema, bowling alleys, bowling alley and, at one point, another small amusement park called Kiddiettown in the former Sears Roebuck, where the Office Depot is now located.
In 1992, the Northshore Mall was acquired by New England Development, which expanded the mall by nearly $1.7 million, and is currently managed by Simon Property Group, which owns 56.4% of it. The mall is the second largest in the state of Massachusetts and the third largest in Massachusetts. It houses a variety of anchor stores, including Sears, Macy's, Sears Roebuck, Best Buy and Target, as well as a number of specialty stores. There is also a basement to the mall, but most of the space is on the first floor of a building on the corner of Main Street and South Street that is not directly connected with each other or with any other part of that basement.
